Earlier this week, the Newburgh’s Town Board gave the nod to the agreement between Resorts World Hudson Valley and Monticello Raceway Management in what could bring massive changes to the gambling industry of New York.
The town board gave unanimous approval to the State Environmental Quality Review under which video lottery machines will be allowed in shopping centers. Furthermore, the board members gave their approval to a proposed zoning change under which Resorts World would be officially given permission to host its electronic gaming casino in the Newburgh Mall.
Gil Piaquadio, Town Supervisor of Newburgh, approved the change of the mall’s purpose, noting that for some time now, the Newburgh Mall has been facing difficulties to lure occupants. Apart from that, this will be the first licensed facility of such kind in Orange County and the Town of Newburgh. Ms. Piaquadio explained that a MidValley Mall-based brick-and-mortar betting parlor had been operating for a long time without any incidents, and so had another gambling venue at Orange Lake from the 1800s to through the 1950s.
The future costs for the video gaming casino of Resor World in Hudson Valley have been estimated at about $32 million. The project is expected to create no less than 200 jobs during the construction works, as well as an additional 229 temporary jobs at the time it starts operation. When completed, the casino is expected to create 215 jobs.
The New Gambling Parlor Will Host 1,300 Electronic Slot Machines
Resorts World Catskill’s parent company Genting had been looking for an appropriate location to host an electronic gaming parlor for a couple of years, without considering the former Nepera Chemical Co. – a property situated in the village of Harriman for the Newburgh Mall.
The mall, established in 1980 on 388,000-square-foot space, has lately been facing difficulties as newer shopping centers started showing up here and there, attracting customers to their offerings and luring the business away. Such shopping centers have been known for using nationally-known anchors to attract more people.
Resorts World Catskills has suggested to the Planning Board of Newburgh to establish a gaming and entertainment facility on 90,000 square feet. The casino and gambling operator revealed expectations to spend $32 million on the new gambling establishment that is set to host 1,300 electronic slots. The signature lounge of Resort World, Bar 360, will also be situated within the facility. The gambling company will move the machines, which were previously used at Monticello Raceway, after it gets the necessary approval.
There are 17 empty storefronts in the Newburgh Mall, with the owners set to offer some incentives to attract new tenants. Furthermore, the approval means that the project will bring $3 million annually that will be divided between Orange County and the Town of Newburgh.
So far, it remains unknown when the electronic gaming casino will start operation. The opening of an electronic gaming facility has been negotiated by Resorts World Catskills, Genting and Monticello Raceway for about three years. The proposed casino is expected to start operation as soon as possible.
