The National Football League (NFL) is taking its ongoing disciplinary action against more players over alleged violations of gambling rules to an end. As revealed by two people with knowledge of the matter, the disciplinary action involves Isaiah Rodgers Sr., a defensive back of the Indianapolis Colts.
The people familiar with the situation, who agreed to speak to The Associated Press under the condition of anonymity, shared that the NFL is set to make an official announcement on the matter later this week. They also noted that a year-long suspension from the sport would be consistent with other punishments that the body had imposed for similar breaches on previous occasions.
When approached for comment, a spokesperson for the Indianapolis Colts refused to talk about the matter, while Isaiah Rodgers Sr.’s agent did not respond to messages seeking content in mid-week.
As The Associated Press revealed, the first sign that Rogers was involved in gambling rules violation occurred when, in early June 2023, sportshandle.com reported that a player of the Indianapolis Colts, who remained unnamed at the time, had been involved with extensive betting. According to the platform’s report, the player in question was found to have placed a massive number of bets, including some on his team.
Later, Rogers responded to the media reports on his Twitter account, saying that he would take full responsibility for his actions and confessed that he had made mistakes but he was now ready to do whatever it took to repair the situation. At the time, he also explained that the had made an error in judgment and he would work hard to make sure that he made things right again.
Several NFL Players Have Faced Charges of Breaching the League’s Gambling Rules
However, Isaiah Rodgers Sr. is not the only player who is facing charges of breaching the gambling policy of the National Football League, under which all players, coaches, team and league officials are banned from placing bets on NFL games, placing wagers at team hotels or facilities, or having a third person place a wager for them.
For the time being, the other players involved in the disciplinary action have not been named.
With an increasing number of US states making sports betting legal, sports leagues across the country have been forced to constantly check for potential gambling infractions. In April 2023, five players were suspended by the National Football League for alleged violations of the league’s gambling rules. Four of these players were part of the Detroit Lions. Three of them – receivers Stanley Berryhill and Quentez Cephus and safety C.J. Moore – were released by the club. Moore and Cephus suffered an indefinite ban for placing wagers on NFL games while Berryhill and receiver Jameson Williams faced six-game suspensions each for betting on non-National Football League games.
An indefinite ban from the game was also handed to Washington Commanders’ defensive end Shaka Toney in April for wagering on NFL games, while in 2022 the NFL banned the then-Atlanta Falcons’ receiver Calvin Ridley for the season.
